Get the Lead Out of Fishing is proud to announce that UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) asked us to create a lesson plan to be used in classrooms all over the world.

We focused on delivering a lesson that is flexible enough to be used at a variety of grade levels and can be tied into other lessons students may already be learning.

This lesson plan is posted here for any teacher or group leader to use to teach how to get the lead out of fishing.

As we like to say, “lead in fishing is a big problem with a simple solution” and this lesson plan is a great way to continue to spread the word.

I was featured in a special education section of the paper on young people making a difference. ”Five Do-Gooders” interviewed teens from all over the country who found a problem and made a real difference in trying to solve it.

The article highlights the origins and success of my project and talks about my Aspergers. I am happy that the “Get the Lead Out of Fishing” message is reaching an entirely new audience of educators and parents. I hope that educators will be inspired to teach their classes about the hidden dangers of lead and that parents will teach their children and buy lead-free fishing weights.

I set up my tent and booth and handed out over 200 kits (containing a sample pack, a button, and a brochure) to participants. It was blisteringly hot that day!

Another successful day of raising awareness!

I was invited to speak at a Boy Scout dinner about how my Aspergers did not prevent success with my project. I have been very outspoken about having Aspergers (which is a form of autism). I told the audience about how hard it was for me to do public speaking (that got a laugh) and how far I had come.

There were several parents in the audience who came up to me after the speech to thank me for being a public face of someone who succeeds in spite of their Aspergers. Several parents told me about the problems their own kids were having. I could relate to all the stories. I think many of these parents came away with a better understanding and appreciation for the difficulties – but also that there really don’t have to be limits on success.

As I have said before, Aspergers is a part of who I am, but it does not define me. I can choose to succeed if I am willing to work hard and understand the challenges that come with Aspergers.

Get the Lead Out of Fishing is proud to announce that Do Something has awarded $500 to me to continue his project.

Do Something believes you have the power to make a difference. It is our aim to inspire, support and celebrate a generation of doers: people who see the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action. At DoSomething.org we provide the tools and resources for you to convert your ideas and energy into positive action. Be part of a generation of doers.

I will use the money to provide additional unleaded fishing kits and public awareness.

I am honored the the executives of Boy Scouts of America have chosen to tell my story in their annual holiday message in Scouting magazine. Their focus was on the power of one person to make a difference. They talk about a part of the project that is not well known: I have Aspergers (a form of autism). Sure, I had additional challenges to overcome, but what is important is that in spite of my challenges, I could make a real difference. I hope that my story gets other people thinking about the difference they can make….

Executives from World Scouting will also be in attendance at this event.

I traveled to Sweden last year and saw Gothenburg and Stockholm. Beautiful country. Me and my team of fellow Scouts represented the United States at a United Nations environmental program where we presented my project before an international audience of about 1000 teens and environmentalists. While there, we were paired with host families who brought us into their home for dinner and gave us a chance to really get to know the Swedish way of life.

I will post the video online after the ceremony.
